Starfighters Space Bets on F-104 Jets to Disrupt Satellite Launches

At 1,200 miles per hour over Florida’s Space Coast, Starfighters Space is testing an unconventional path to orbit. The company is repurposing its fleet of supersonic F-104 fighter jets as airborne launch platforms, aiming to capture a share of the small-satellite market projected to hit $69 billion by 2030.

Rather than relying on traditional ground-based rockets, Starfighters Space (NYSE American: FJET) intends to carry payloads to approximately 45,000 feet before release. CEO Tim Franta, a Brevard County native who took the helm in 2026, describes the model as the "Uber Eats of space." By providing a running start at Mach 2, the company hopes to offer a more responsive and cost-effective alternative to heavy-lift operators like SpaceX or Blue Origin.

Operating from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, the company utilizes the historic Space Shuttle runway to manage its fleet. While the firm draws on over two decades of flight experience, the technical requirements for the F-104 are demanding. Franta, who has piloted the aircraft himself, emphasizes that success requires a methodical approach to engineering and securing the necessary capital to reach commercial viability.

Investors are currently tracking the company’s progress toward its next major milestone: a drop test. While Starfighters faces significant regulatory, funding, and execution hurdles inherent in the early-stage aerospace sector, the persistent backlog of satellites waiting for launch slots provides a clear incentive for alternative delivery systems. The company maintains that its focus remains on small-scale, precision deployment, positioning itself as a niche player in a rapidly evolving space economy.
