Disney has confirmed the production of a fourth installment in the franchise, titled The Cheetah Girls: Next Gen, featuring original stars Raven-Symoné and Adrienne Bailon. The project will see the duo returning to their roles as Galleria and Chanel, now mentoring a younger cast that includes Leah Sava Jeffries and Carmen Sanchez. The plot centers on a trip to Africa, where the younger generation discovers the titular spirit while volunteering at a wildlife sanctuary. Despite the excitement from some long-term viewers, the casting choices have sparked intense debate regarding the identity of the characters, who were created as Black girls in the original book series by author Deborah Gregory.
Critics argue that the modern reboot ignores the cultural foundation of the property, with many pointing to the original novels as a touchstone for Black representation. While Raven-Symoné celebrated the announcement on Instagram, comments reflect a deep-seated frustration from fans who feel the essence of the story is being diluted. This reaction follows Adrienne Bailon’s previous comments to The Blast, where she expressed that any revival would need to be executed with care to avoid compromising the legacy of the original films. As the project moves toward a release on Disney+, the studio faces the challenge of balancing nostalgia for a beloved classic with the demands of a modern audience increasingly vocal about casting authenticity.
