Bookshop.org challenges Audible with ethical audiobook subscription

Bookshop.org is launching an audiobook subscription service to compete directly with Amazon’s Audible, offering an alternative for readers who want their digital purchases to support local high street retailers. The platform will charge £12.99 per credit, providing independent shops with a new, consistent revenue stream from the growing audio market.

To build momentum for the rollout, the company is installing listening stations in eight pilot locations across the country. The largest installation will appear at Real Magic Books in Wendover, featuring a custom mural by graphic designer Craig Oldham. These stations are intended to bridge the gap between digital listening and the physical bookstore experience, allowing staff to offer personal recommendations for audio titles just as they do for printed works.

Nicole Vanderbilt, Managing Director of Bookshop.org UK, noted that the move targets the 30% of readers who consumed an audiobook in the last year, providing them a way to shop without relying on Amazon. Independent booksellers, including representatives from Rossiter Books and The Main Street Trading Company, have welcomed the integration, citing the rapid growth of the sector and the potential to draw new customers into the indie ecosystem. Every credit purchased through the service will now generate direct financial benefits for the independent retailers partnered with the platform.
