IBM Shrinks Data Center Footprint with New z17 and LinuxONE Systems

The expansion marks the first time IBM has offered rack mount options alongside single frame units across its entire Z and LinuxONE lines. By allowing clients to co-locate IBM hardware with third-party equipment, the company is addressing the growing scarcity of data center real estate. These systems support up to 82 cores and 18 TB of memory, reflecting a 20% increase in core count and a 12% boost in memory capacity compared to previous generations.

Beyond hardware, IBM is introducing software tools to lower the barrier to entry for managing these environments. The new Infrastructure Management for Z and LinuxONE platform incorporates Infrastructure-as-Code principles to streamline provisioning, while COBOL Elevate for z/OS seeks to modernize legacy applications without requiring rewrites. Security remains a core focus, with post-quantum cryptography now standard across the new models. The hardware rollout begins August 12, 2026, with associated management tools following shortly after in mid-September.
