Attorneys Launch Investigation Into Upper East Side Legionnaires' Outbreak

Eighteen people have fallen ill with Legionnaires' disease in New York City’s Upper East Side, prompting a formal investigation by attorneys Jory Lange and Scott Harford. The cluster of cases, centered across zip codes 10075, 10028, and 10128, has raised urgent questions regarding building maintenance and public safety.

Public health officials are currently testing cooling towers in the affected neighborhoods for the presence of Legionella bacteria. These systems, if improperly maintained during the warm summer months, can aerosolize the bacteria, allowing it to spread through invisible water vapor that residents may inhale without realizing the risk. While the bacteria are not contagious between individuals, the severity of the resulting pneumonia often necessitates hospitalization, with a mortality rate of approximately ten percent.

Lange and Harford, who previously represented over 50 victims in last year’s Harlem outbreak, emphasize that these incidents are preventable through consistent water system maintenance. The legal team is now gathering information to determine if building owners neglected their duty to disinfect cooling towers. Their efforts focus on securing compensation for medical expenses and lost wages while holding property owners accountable for systemic failures. Residents who believe they have been exposed to the bacteria are being encouraged to seek legal guidance as the city continues its testing protocols.
