AsReader Brings Japanese RFID Basket Scanning to North America

Retailers across the United States, Canada, and Mexico can now deploy advanced RFID basket reading technology, following a strategic North American expansion by AsReader. The move, bolstered by a newly secured patent, introduces the company’s point-of-sale TUB device to a market previously dominated by localized, smaller-scale inventory systems.

The AsReader RFID Reading TUB enables stores to instantly identify multiple tagged items simultaneously within a shopping basket or checkout container. Developed and battle-tested in Japan by parent company Asterisk, the hardware aims to streamline the checkout process while providing real-time inventory visibility. By automating the scanning of entire baskets, retailers can reduce labor demands and improve the overall customer experience.

Paul Whitney, Vice President and COO at AsReader, views the new patent as a critical shield for the company’s intellectual property as it scales across the continent. Beyond the apparel sector, where RFID infrastructure is already mature, the company is targeting growth in grocery, logistics, and healthcare. AsReader intends to facilitate these deployments through a mix of direct retail contracts and strategic partnerships with system integrators and point-of-sale providers.
