Nexsphere-F Microspheres Cut Knee Osteoarthritis Pain by 57 Percent

A 57 percent drop in patient pain scores highlights the results of a new study on Nexsphere-F, a fast-resorbable embolic agent used to treat knee osteoarthritis. Published in the journal Radiology, the study tracks the efficacy of genicular artery embolization in patients who failed to respond to conventional injections.

Researchers at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin conducted the prospective observational study, which followed 194 patients across 239 procedures. The data demonstrates a 100 percent technical success rate, with median Numeric Rating Scale pain scores falling from 7 to 3 over a 12-month period. Beyond pain relief, roughly 80 percent of participants reported a minimum clinically important difference in knee function and overall quality of life.

The study positions Nexsphere-F as a safer alternative to permanent microspheres, which have historically linked to higher rates of skin discoloration and ulceration. In this trial, transient skin discoloration occurred in only 6.3 percent of cases and resolved within a day, with no reports of moderate or severe adverse events. NEXTBIOMEDICAL, the South Korean developer behind the technology, intends to leverage these findings to bolster its European market presence and support ongoing clinical trials for FDA approval in the United States.
