The report, authored by Public Citizen and the Revolving Door Project, documents how Freedom 250—an entity established by Trump loyalists following their unsuccessful bid to control the congressionally-authorized America 250 commission—has secured nearly $103 million in government funding since October. These disbursements are directed toward organizations linked to prominent figures, including Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, campaign manager Chris LaCivita, and former finance director Meredith O’Rourke.
Beyond federal backing, Freedom 250 is securing private capital from corporations with active regulatory interests before the administration, such as ExxonMobil, Oracle, Lockheed Martin, Palantir, and United Airlines. Critics argue this creates a clear conflict of interest, raising concerns that corporate donations are being exchanged for direct access to the president. Alan Zibel, research director at Public Citizen, described the operation as a move to replace traditional civic reflection with an agenda focused on lionizing the former president and catering to his political base. The tension between the partisan Freedom 250 and the nonpartisan America 250 remains high, with LaCivita dismissing the latter’s objections by claiming they are unable to accept the current political reality.
