The data, which reviewed claims over a half-decade period, identifies water damage as the primary threat, accounting for 537 claims and nearly $10 million in losses. This figure dwarfs the 54 claims attributed to fireworks, suggesting that common household maintenance issues pose a significantly greater financial risk than festive displays. Barnaby Nardella, Chief Claims Officer at Mercury Insurance, notes that while fireworks demand caution, they often distract homeowners from more frequent, mundane hazards.
Secondary risks include weather-related damage and a notable spike in property crime. To mitigate these threats, the insurer recommends securing perimeter gates, activating security systems, and conducting routine inspections of plumbing and outdoor trees before departing for holiday events.
