Sainsbury’s to Expand Facial Recognition Surveillance to 150 Stores

Before Christmas, Sainsbury’s will deploy AI-powered facial recognition software across more than 150 locations, scaling up a partnership with Facewatch. The grocery giant cites the system’s ability to deter repeat offenders, claiming that nine out of ten individuals flagged by the technology avoid returning to stores where the system is active.

The current rollout follows a pilot program across 55 sites. The mechanism allows retailers to upload reports of shoplifting or violent behavior, which are then verified by moderators. When a person matching a flagged profile enters a store, staff receive an immediate alert via the Facewatch system.

Despite the retailer’s confidence in the technology, the deployment has faced scrutiny following an incident in South East London. A customer was incorrectly identified and ejected from an Elephant and Castle branch, an error the company attributed to a staff misidentification rather than a technical failure. Sainsbury’s stated that this was an isolated human error and maintained that the Facewatch software has not incorrectly identified any individuals to date.
